      Well, at the time of this filming + recording, Maestro Blomstedt was _only_ 88. I was to attend his concert conducting the NHK Symphony Orchestra in October 2023 in Tokorozawa, Japan, but he cancelled it due to ill health. He was 96 at that time, which has already surpassed Leopold Stokowski (who died at age 95) and must enter the Guinness Book.

    Amazingly respectful how the German audience just maintained a total, reverential silence for many, many seconds after the final notes of the piece. To erupt in applause, as is so commonly done, just destroys the magic of Beethoven. That conduct should be the norm. We were spared the brutish “bravos” shouted by the show-off audience members wanting to show that yes, they knew the piece was over and one is expected to shout an Italian word at the top of one’s lungs.

    • @ChollieD
      @ChollieD 4 месяца назад

      OK, but this attitude of there being an exactly correct which-fork-do-I-use etiquette kills interest in classical music. Normal people don't want to attend a mausoleum of pristine perfection. I want to be still and let music wash over me, and not worry too much if somebody applauds between movements (which used to be MORE common). or some other minor _breach of etiquette_ occurs. The silence is nice, but the magic of a great Beethoven performance can not be killed by a Bravo, Bravi (even more pretentious!), or even a wolf whistle at the hot soprano.

      I'm no pro by any means nor do I understand the singing. BUT I do like to listen at work at times. I actually attended my first concert last night...Beerhoven's Symphony 9, and felt led to look it up today on RUclips after hearing the explanation of what it was about. Listening to Ode to Joy now. But this lady seated before me last night seemed annoyed that I was humming to the lyrics...not loudly at all. I found it very stoic. You couldn't even open a candy rapper without it feeling like you were disturbing the peace. I thoroughly enjoyed the performance, and I agree the corpseish decorum can turn one away and make you feel like an outsider, especially if you're not knowledgeable about the etiquette.
